Welcome
The One-Hundredth Issue.
I skipped last week for a good reason. To stand up in a wedding for one of the best good-quality dudes I know. Cheers, Rodney!
One hundred! That's exciting. I had grandiose visions of writing a nice soliloquy to honor this milestone, but it will need to wait. Many, many things are being juggled as I near the end of grad school for applied data science. It's also summer, which means you better take advantage of every fun opportunity while it's available!
This week's lineup consists of a man chasing .400. I believe I have shared articles in the past that suggest that modern-day .400 is much lower, but it's a threshold narrative that won't change over time. Another reviews the changes in baseball and the impact on performance and injuries. Next, an attempt to improve xG for soccer using PFF shooter grades. Harvard reviews. NBA streakiness, and we follow it all up with a neat NHL draft stock app that mirrors Grinding The Mocks for NFL. Yes, I know the draft has concluded; it's still cool.
I am interested in sports-related data science opportunities. Let's chat!
This Week's Lineup
Luis Arráez Will He Achieve Immortality in His Quest for .400?
The Luis Arráez stats are remarkable. He's batting .397 and no one has finished with an average over .400 in a full season since 1941.
The Pitch Clock and Its Effects on Pitching Performance and Injuries
Is the pitch clock causing any large-scale changes to performance or increasing injury risk?
Using PFF Shooting Grades to improve goalscoring predictions in MLS
Incorporates PFF's shooting grades to improve xG predictions.
Demystifying NBA Streakiness
Attempts to look at it from a team level, and not an individual level, as past research has been focused on. Conclusions point to luck and randomness.
