Welcome
83rd issue!
Good variety this week, other than aging curves making me feel old. Another Big Data Bowl paper, more women's basketball stats are being added to a database, and can Purdue pull it off this year? Oh, aging curves? How about for dunks and hitting in baseball? I'm lying on a heating pad while writing this lol.
I am interested in sports-related data science opportunities. Let's chat!
This Week's Lineup
Hack-a-Sack NFL Big Data Bowl
An NFL Big Data Bowl submission aimed at trying to answer who has a higher chance of getting a sack based on scheme and alignment. Details of the project within, nice work!
Women’s Stats Added to College Basketball Reference
Their database nearly doubled by adding women's college basketball statistics dating back to 2009-2010. Keep it going!
Purdue And Zach Edey Have Defied Expectations Again. Can They Do It In March?
Purdue has been impressive by out-playing their AP Preason and recruiting ranks.
LeBron James and the slam dunk aging curve
Dunk attempts of field goals attempted has been mostly steady over the past 25 years. Great visualizations show how by age and position, players stop dunking as often. Except for Lebron. He's still going steady.
Aging Curves and Platoon Splits: Introducing the Albert Zone
Two aging curve articles? You'd think I just played basketball again for the first time in years and am questioning if I've lost a step or two. Centered around Pujols' stellar 2022 year, this one looks into a decline of wRC+ of hitters based on the sided-ness of the pitcher-hitter matchup.
